  1. Muslim empire of the Turks 1300-1920, the
  2. successor of the Seljuk Empire. It was
  3. founded by Osman I and reached its height
  4. with Suleiman in the 16th century. Its
  5. capital was Istanbul (formerly
  6. Constantinople). At its greatest extent its
  7. boundaries were Europe as far as Hungary,
  8. part of S Russia, Iran, the Palestinian
  9. coastline, Egypt, and N Africa. From the 17th
  10. century it was in decline. There was an
  11. attempted revival and reform under the Young
  12. Turk party 1908, but the regime crumbled when
  13. Turkey took the German side in World War I.
  14. The sultanate was abolished by Ataturk 1922;
  15. the last sultan was Muhammad VI.
  16.
